How to convert kW to VA

How to convert real power in kilowatts (kW) to apparent power in volt-amps (VA).

Kilowatts to volt-amps calculation formula

To convert real power in kilowatts (kW) to apparent power in volt-amps (VA), you can use the following formula:

S(VA) =  1000 × P(kW) / PF

So volt-amps are equal to 1000 times kilowatts divided by the power factor.

volt-amps = 1000 × kilowatts / PF

or

VA = 1000 × kW / PF

Example

  • S is the apparent power in volt-amps,
  • P is the real power in kilowatts,
  • PF is the power factor.

To use the formula, simply substitute the values for P and PF into the equation and solve for S.

For example, if you have a real power of 4 kilowatts and a power factor of 0.8, you can calculate the apparent power in volt-amps like this:

Solution:

S = 1000 × 4kW / 0.8 = 5000VA

This means that the apparent power in the circuit is 5000 volt-amps.

It's important to note that the power factor must be a decimal value between 0 and 1 to use this formula. If the power factor is not a decimal value between 0 and 1, you'll need to convert it to a decimal value first before using the formula. You can do this by dividing the power factor by 100. For example, if the power factor is 80%, the decimal value would be 0.8.
